Hamster Feeding Hamster is an omnivorous animal. It eats both vegetables and meat as food. It needs to be fed with an adequate quantity of food. It likes variation in the food items. It should be fed a balanced diet. The diet of hamster should compulsorily include vegetables and fruits. This doesn’t mean only vegetables and fruits; they have to be fed with meat as well.

Before hamster feeding, decide the content and quantity of food. This can be done by closely examining the food preferences of your hamster for a few days. Based on these observations, decide the food items that are to be included in the diet of the hamster.

Hamsters don’t get easily adapted to food items. Allow them to get adjusted to the food items. If they have any health complications, then opt for other food items once they have completely recovered. Occasionally, they could be fed with food treats that are made of their favorite food items. They can be also fed with hamster food that is available in the market. You can gradually increase the quantity of food once they have adapted to the food items given by you.

The food given to a hamster should be given in right quantity. It should contain carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals, and vitamins in the right proportion. Hamsters should be supplied with fresh water and hygienic conditions. The leftover food items should be cleaned everyday. If the hamster consumes this contaminated food, it would get ill.

They are more prone to diseases like diarrhea and obesity. Hence, it is required to give them food items that are essential for their body. They should be given vegetables and fruits in small quantities. The food should be thoroughly washed before feeding them. These vegetables and fruits should be cut into small pieces and given to them.

There are many contradictory views about the time of hamster feeding. Some believe that the evening time is the correct time to feed them. Others believe that morning is the correct time. The most preferred time to feed a hamster is during night.

They are to be fed with food items in small quantities. They are to be fed twice a day.

Food items should be stored in a dry place. They are to be supplied with fresh foods. Don’t give them extra food items. These food items may get spoilt after sometime. The vessels that are used for hamster feeding are to be cleaned thoroughly. It should not contain any leftover food in it. There are possibilities of a hamster consuming these food items. They should be given fresh supply of water everyday. Don’t supply them with stagnant water.

Things to be avoided while hamster feeding includes:

  • Cooked food, oily food, and sugar coated food
  • Contaminated food items
  • Water with high chlorine content in it
  • Junk food
  • Food stuffs such as potato leaves, tomato leaves, and onion
  • Don’t overfeed them
  • Sharp and sticky foods
  • Drastic changes in food items

If you adopt some simple tips that can be used to feed your hamster, then they would remain healthy and live longer. Hamster feeding is a very effortless task. There are many items available that can be supplied to them as food. You have to keep in mind that the food item should be fresh and cleaned thoroughly before feeding them. Feeding them in the right quantity is also to be considered.
