Lizard Feeding
Most lizards are entirely carnivorous. Really large ones will takemice or day old chicks, and may eat a small lizard, but most ofthem will need insects such as crickets and other forms of livefood. Before feeding, sprinkle the prey with a multivitamin powder -you can shake the two together in a polythene bag. Some lizardswill take a little fruit, and Common Iguanas are almost completelyvegetarian. As with snakes, lizards cannot bite chunks from theirfood, so iguanas must be fed a variety of fruit and vegetables thathave been cut into suitably sized chunks, but in addition they needlivefood, such as mealworms, calcium carbonate and vitamin D3which should be given in the proportions 2 parts calcium carbon-ate and 1 part D3, sprinkled on the food together with a multi-vitamin powder such as vionate or SA 37 from your vet. Not morethan one capsule of D3 should be fed each week, and on one daya week the iguana should not be fed at all though fresh, cleanwater must be available at all times. Mineral grit in a separate dishaids digestion, and a little canned dog or cat food can be added tothe menu, but not more than three times weekly.
