Dog Walker

Dog WalkerDog walker is a trained professional who takes the pet dog for a walk and other outdoor activities. It can be a group of dogs or a dog depending on the services one chooses. Dogs are excellent companions to have on a walk, as long as they are well-behaved. There are some dogs that may be harmful by their acts. A dog walker is trained to handle dogs in such situations. They are also trained to how to follow a specific route while walking which does not disturb other people and dogs too.

Dog walking professional has grown rapidly over last ten years. A walker should possess a specialized knowledge and skill to ensure safety of dogs in their charge, as well as themselves and other dogs and humans who share beaches, parks and trails.

Before hiring a walker for pet dog, ask for following information to the walker and decide whether this walker is suitable for your pet dog.

Ask to the walker whether he/she is trained in canine learning theory, pack management and body language. A good walker should use scientifically sound, humane training methods. His/her body language should be alert and capability to take appropriate steps to prevent fights. A good walker should have a judgment about which dogs to place together for maximum compatibility. Walker should handle issues like quarrels over space, toys or play styles. In short, a good walker has to be a trained, knowledgeable and skilled professional who can keep the group together and under control.

Number of dogs
Ask the number of dogs a walker can take out together. If the number exceeds than eight, than it is not a good sign. More the number of dogs more are the risk of dog getting involved in conflict and injury. It is impossible for a walker to pay attention to each dog. So select a walker which does not carry a group of more number of dogs.

Is the walker alone or is with a companion
A walker’s job is to keep dog safe and have a good time together. Walker should be focused on the dogs all the time. Teaming up with a friend can be fun, but this can reduce attention. If the companion is a friend and is a dog walker, going out together combines two sets of dogs, which may cause more distracting situations and conflicts. So, walker should hit the trail alone and not with other companions. Cell phones and other distracting devices should be turned off during dog walks.

Ask for the size of dogs that are made to walk together. Small dogs can be injured if they walk or play with the large ones. So if you possess a small dog, insists that your dog only walks with dogs of his/her size.

The time quoted by a walker to take the dog for walking should exclude the transportation and other activities. Insist on the dog walk time to be more as this is a healthy exercise for dogs.

Before enrolling your dog for a dog walker, ask whether the company is a licensed one. They should also carry a dog-walking insurance and all employees of the company should be bonded.
