There are many pigeons that can live in any type of house but there are some pigeons that would prefer to live in a house that resembles their natural habitat. Some pigeons may like to reside in a house that has only one compartment with a single entrance. While there are many pigeons that live in colonies in a group of 30 to 40 and would prefer to reside in partitioned compartments. Therefore it is essential to understand the requirements of your pigeon before purchasing home for your pigeon. There are different types of pigeon houses that are classified on the basis of their characteristics.
Types of pigeon coop:
- Pigeon cages: It is a good idea to keep small pigeons in cage. It is advisable to have rectangular cage than the square one as it is more enhanced. Make sure that the bar spacing of this cage is small enough so that the bird cannot get its head through. It is a good idea to have partially enclosed or box type cage for your small pigeon as that is more secure. It is a good idea to keep the cage in bright light areas but it should not be kept under direct sunlight. It should be kept at normal room temperature with humidity 50 to 70 %.
- Pigeon Aviary: Aviary is an ideal choice for medium and large size pigeons. This pigeon house should be kept in day light. The ideal size of this type of housing is 2 to 2.5 m high.
- Pigeon Nest box: Pigeons require nest box for breeding and raising their babies. This type of houses is a good option for the pigeons that want to be enclosed.
- Pigeon dovecote or lofts: this type of house is ideal for the birds that want to free flight. It is a natural way of homing pigeon.
Care and maintenance of pigeon coop:
One should clean their pigeon coop regularly in order to avoid bacterial growth. It is advisable to clean feeders of pigeon housing daily as that can also to infection in pigeon housing. It is a duty if owner to protect their pigeon’s from raccoons, opossums, cat, dog by keeping it at an appropriate height.
Although pigeons like to sit on flat surfaces like cliffs, park statues, window edge and terrace. However, it is a good idea to provide housing to the pigeon as that will provide it more sense of security and comfort.
