Litter Training a Rabbit

Having a rabbit as your pet is exciting. It is not only a beautiful creature but also makes a great pet and becomes a friend of children very easily. But to maintain the health and hygiene of the rabbit and your family it is important that you take good care of the rabbit. Therefore as a rabbit owner you should have a good idea of the rabbit care methods. It is also important that you properly toilet train rabbit to keep the environment of your home hygienic and healthy. The urine of the rabbit has a strong odor and that could spoil the freshness of the rooms. So you have to start training the rabbit to use the toilet early before the rabbit forms the habit of urinating at any place the house. Moreover, if you start litter training a rabbit when it is young it will be lot easier for you.

For litter training a rabbit you have to start from the rabbit cage or the rabbit hutch where your rabbit spends most of the time. You have to place the litter box in a place where the rabbit generally uses for a bathroom. But you have to make sure that the litter box is big enough so that the rabbit can fit into it comfortably otherwise the rabbit will never sit in the litter box. If the rabbit does not get into the box you can pick the rabbit and make it sit in the box. For that you have to keep a watch on the rabbit and make out when it is going to urinate or defecate. Generally the rabbit becomes restless and lifts the tail slightly. Once you make the rabbit sit in the litter box do not let it get out of the box until it is done. To make the rabbit sit in the box you can put some toys in the box. Once the rabbit uses the litter box get it out of the box and reward the pet with some food or toys to make it realize that it has done something praiseworthy. These are small gestures but the animals are too sensitive to get the hints.

Once the rabbit forms the habit of using the litter box within the cage you can start with the next step of litter training a rabbit. That is to place the litter box in the room. You can use different litter box for different rooms but it would be easier to start with one box. While toilet training the rabbit and even after that make sure that the rabbit has easy access to the litter box. That will make the rabbit use litter box easily whenever it needs it. When you are toilet training the rabbit make sure that the litter box is made of non toxic materials. Rabbit have a habit of eating their own litter and hence the litter box should not contain any substance that can cause threat to the health of the rabbit. So while buying the litter box for your rabbit take care of this aspect as well.
