Rabbit Antibiotic
Antibiotics are the products of certain micro-organisms, andtheir use has recently been widely developed in animalfeeding. The first antibiotic was penicillin, and this wasfollowed by aureomycin, terramycin and others. Althoughthe addition of a certain amount of some antibiotics to thefoodstuffs of some animals has resulted in increased growthrate and improved conversion ability, experimental work withthe rabbit has not shown these results. The only major effectwhich has been produced when an antibiotic (aureomycinat to grams + 9 milligrams of Bit per ton of food) has beenfed is an excellent reduction in mortality amongst the youngrabbits. This improvement was particularly noticeable in thecase of mortality due to mucoid enteritis, which was reduced toa quarter of its previous incidence. Thus the use of antibioticsupplemented foodstuffs, which have proved to produce noharmful results, particularly among breeding stock, but whichdoes assist in reducing mortality, is to be recommended.
